Be SMART for kids

Carolyn Buck volunteers for the Be SMART for Kids organization (BeSMARTforKids.org). This organization works with school systems to develop a gun safety curriculum. After the Uvalde, CA school shooting Carolyn looked for a way to get involved because she has elementary-aged children. Firearms are the leading cause of death of under 18-year-olds in the U.S. Holland, Black River, and West Ottawa Public Schools have had lockdowns this year because of guns on campus. Last year in Michigan there were 1382 deaths and 2437 people wounded by firearms.

Children growing up see guns in movies, video games, and play with toy guns. 31% of gun deaths are suicides and 4.6 million children live in a household with at least one loaded and unlocked gun. Suicide attempts with a gun are successful 90% of the time. If guns were less accessible, a mental health crisis might be dealt with and not result in death. The newly passed laws in Michigan will be very helpful in reducing deaths.

The acronym SMART is for:

  • Secure guns so only responsible persons can access them. 13 million households have guns,
  • Model responsible behavior. The message to kids should be "Don't touch".
  • Ask if there are guns at other locations. If your kids go to a friend's house, you should make sure any firearms are secured.
  • Recognize mental health issues. 20% of high schoolers have had suicidal thoughts and 41% of suicide deaths are children.
  • Tell peers about responsible gun ownership issues.
Pickleball Tournament Opportunity
By now you should be aware that our club is hosting a Pickleball Tournament fundraiser on Sept. 28-29 at Park Township.  Last week at the club meeting I announced we are looking at this time for Court Sponsors.  There are 10 new courts behind the township hall location on Ottawa Beach Road,  and to use them that weekend, we are charged $100 per court each day (a total cost to the club of $2000).  I hope we can find 20 Holland Rotarians who agree to 'sponsor' a court for $100.  As of the end of our meeting, 11 Rotarians said they were "in" -- and 4 already paid that day!  Being a court sponsor is not something for everyone, and you should feel no pressure to be a sponsor (everyone's situation is different and I'm only looking for those who can commit at this time).  There will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to volunteer that weekend!

If you are willing to sponsor a court and haven't already committed as one of our first 11 sponsors, please send a brief email or text message to me.  When you are able and ready a check should be made out to Holland Rotary Charities (sometime before Sept. 28-29).  Thank you for your consideration.
